The Story of Gaelbhratach

The Gaelbhratach scheme was established in response to the need to create natural opportunities to speak Irish outside of the formal classroom setting. The scheme officially began in the 2012/13 school year at primary level and at secondary level the following year. In the years since, the scheme has worked with every kind of school in all corners of the country – from both urban and rural schools seeking to breathe new life into Gaeilge, to Irish-medium and Gaeltacht schools where it is spoken as the main language every day.

We are immensely grateful to all of those who have supported and helped develop Gaelbhratach over the years – our sponsors Foras na Gaeilge, the Department of Education, each of the other Irish language organisations, and the hundreds of teachers and students who put their heart and soul into the promotion of Gaeilge every day.

What is Gaelbhratach?

The Gaelbhratach scheme was founded in response to the need to create natural opportunities to speak Irish outside of the classroom and Irish lesson time. The scheme was officially started in the 2012/13 school year at primary level and the following year at post-primary level.Ever since, the scheme has influenced every kind of school all over the country – from urban and rural schools where there is a need to breathe new life into the language, to Irish-medium and Gaeltacht schools in which Irish is the main everyday language.

We are extremely grateful to the many people who have supported the scheme and its development over the years – our sponsors Foras na Gaeilge, the Department of Education, the other Irish Language Lead-Organisations, and the hundreds of teachers and students who put their heart and soul into the promotion of Irish every day.
